It’s back! I used to host a Summer Art Challenge with my classes before Covid, but it kind of fell off the radar. I’ve decided to give it another go this year and see what cool stuff the kids come up with. Here’s how it works: I’ll hand out a list of art challenges for the kids to tackle over the summer. I’ll be slipping flyers into their lockers and including it in our final school newsletter. The kids can complete these projects over the summer and bring them back during the first week of school. I’ll have some small prizes for those who turn in at least 3 projects. Their artwork will be showcased in the front display case and on the bulletin boards at school. This way, we’ll have an awesome display ready for the first weeks of school when we usually don’t have much to showcase yet.

About 11 years ago I came up with the idea to do a Summer Art Challenge, based on the fun I had as a girl doing those summer reading programs where you earned a little prize at the library.
You can see the first one my students did back in 2012 here. They brought in their summer artwork and we had a great display!
In 2015, I did another summer art challenge with printable handouts on my blog.
I think the display of all the summer art by the kids was even more impressive that year!!
That same year, MiniMatisse also put together a summer art challenge powerpoint and you should see the results on her blog!
In 2018 our town was having large decorated Bucky Badger mascot sculptures all over the city. I included that as part of the summer art challenge. That was a fun year!
Have you ever done a summer art challenge? What did you do?
