Grid Name Design for Back to School

Are you looking for an easy back to school project for your students? Here is a name design that I have taught in the past. This will be easy for you to do, with very little prep. My own kiddo did this project in their 2nd grade class and that is where I got the idea. It is so simple yet makes cool results. All you need to do is print out the grid paper and maybe make an example for yourself. I have done this with kids as young as 1st grade.

A colorful drawing composed of repeated text spelling "MARCIA" in various alternating colors and patterns within a grid layout on white paper, creating an eye-catching grid name design perfect for back to school.

On the grid paper, write the letters of your name (here I did “Marcia”) across the paper, with one letter in each square. Then just keep going and continue writing your name throughout all of the squares in order. Using crayons or media of your choice, color in one section of one of the letters. Repeat that same color throughout all of that same sections on the same letter. Continue coloring so that each letter ends up being colored the consistently (for example, I colored all of the inside of the A’s pink).

Here is the grid paper that I made up for this project. You can print a free clean PDF copy by clicking here.

Introducing our "Back to School" Grid Design: A 5x5 grid composed of 25 empty squares outlined in black on a white background.

Have fun and good luck going back to school!

It seem like it was a great lesson for children to be able to create their name on paper and design it their way.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
