This year during Latinx Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) I will be teaching my 3rd graders about Frida Kahlo and her many pets. It is a good reminder to teach about diverse artists throughout the year and throughout your curriculum.
Frida Kahlo’s had many pets including macaws, parakeets, a parrot, sparrows, a cat, a fawn, monkeys, an eagle, and hairless dogs with ancient Aztec lineage.
Many of her self-portraits feature herself with animals. The animals are like children to her, they are friendly and bonded with her. They are protective. The animals and other natural elements show a strong connection to nature.
This is a great children’s book about her and her animals. (Amazon affiliate link used). If you are going to teach about her to your elementary classes, I highly recommend it.
This is my example for a self-portrait with a pet. I am going to have my 3rd graders draw a picture of themselves with either their pet or a pet they would like to have as a companion animal. This project leaves it wide open for including their identity and their interests. It is so important when teaching art to children that you encourage them to create art that is meaningful to them and that connects to their own life.
Have you taught about Frida Kahlo before? How did you introduce her artwork? Have your kids made artwork inspired by her? Share in the comments!
