Easy Homemade Scratch Art

Today I am going to show you a quick and easy homemade scratch art trick which is fun for kids to try. You can make your own real scratch art paper using oil pastels and watered down black paint. Or you can buy your own scratch art paper pre-made (affiliate link). This is a fun little trick that amazes and delights kids. You can make your own scratch art paper using just crayons.

  1. Start by coloring a patchwork of colors on your paper. Color really dark and hard with your crayons. Try this with a small section on your paper. This technique is best in small sections.

2. Next, start coloring over your patchwork colors with black crayon. You will need to really use your muscles and color very hard to make it look solid. It takes a bit of an effort to do this, that is why you want to start small when doing this technique.

3. Continue coloring over your colors with black until it is all covered.

4. That’s it! Now you are ready to scratch in a design, revealing the colors below. You can use a wooden stick or you can use a regular pencil!

5. Simply scratch in your design and the black scratches off, leaving the colorful patchwork below.

How did I use this technique with my kids? We are still fully virtual, so I sent home some pre-made Scratch art paper and wooden styluses with my students and they created artwork on those for their asynchronous art time. During our live Zoom session, I showed them how to use their crayons to make their own Scratch art paper. They had a blast and thought it was really cool.
