Georgia O’Keeffe and Flower Paintings for Kids

Four vibrant flower paintings, labeled as a Georgia O'Keeffe study, set against a purple background with the title below.

I love these tempera paint flowers that are inspired by the artwork of Georgia O’Keeffe.

Two colorful flower paintings of sunflowers on vibrant backgrounds, one yellow on blue and the other white on reddish-orange.

These close-up paintings were created by my 2nd grade students last year.

The children used photo references to draw large flowers. Then, they painted with colors and finally, outlined in black paint.  I really love the white polka dot on black background in the top right picture.  I may suggest a patterned background to students next time I teach this project.

Six vibrant flower paintings arranged in a 2x3 grid against a black background bring to mind the style of Georgia O'Keeffe.

To tie in art history, we read some books about the artist Georgia O’Keeffe.  She grew up in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, which is very close to where we live.  I showed the students many examples of her enlarged flower paintings.  I think the students did a great job on their paintings!  Below are some good books about Georgia O’Keeffe.

Cover of "Through Georgia's Eyes" showing Georgia O'Keeffe painting a giant, red-orange flower. Written by Rachel Rodriguez.
Book cover: "Georgia in Hawaii: When Georgia O'Keeffe Painted What She Pleased" by Amy Novesky, illustrated by Yuyi Morales. Discover how O'Keeffe's trip to Hawaii inspired her vibrant flower paintings in this beautiful story for kids.
The book cover of "My Name is Georgia" depicts a woman holding a flower against a cloudy sky background.
