Shape Monsters Art Project

I found this cute book called My Very Silly Monster Book of Shapes.  I read this book to my Kindergartners and then we did a shape monster art project similar to the shape monsters seen on this blog.

Three colorful "Shape Monsters" made from various shapes and features are displayed against a white background with the text "SHAPE MONSTERS." This fun art project emphasizes creativity and learning.

After reading the book, the kindergarteners were given the choice of several different shape templates:  rectangles, ovals, stars, hexagons, squares, etc.  They traced the template onto construction paper.  Then, I demonstrated how to make eyes by cutting circles from white squares, then drawing the black pupil with a marker.  Then, I demonstrated how to draw and cut out a black mouth, with white teeth made from cut out white rectangles.  A lot of the kids decided to draw cavities on their teeth, so that is why many of them have black spots!

Colorful paper cutouts of a pink star and red circle shaped monsters with the words "Art Project: Shape Monsters" at the top.

Kids could add legs, arms, feet and hair with construction paper scraps.

Two colorful Shape Monsters made from various cut-out shapes and papers with text "SHAPE MONSTERS" below them, showcasing a fun art project. Two colorful star-shaped shape monsters with playful facial features, made from paper for an art project.

I think these turned out pretty spooky and fun!  Have you ever made Shape Monsters before?

What are your favorite shape projects?
