About 6 years ago I came up with the idea to do a Summer Art Challenge, based on the fun I had as a girl doing those summer reading programs where you earned a little prize at the library.
You can see the first one my students did back in 2012 here. They brought in their summer artwork and we had a great display!
In 2015, I did another summer art challenge with printable handouts on my blog.
I think the display of all the summer art by the kids was even more impressive that year!!
That same year, MiniMatisse also put together a summer art challenge powerpoint and you should see the results on her blog!
This year, I decided to simplify the handout a bit and make it all fit on one page! Also, I changed up the art challenge ideas. I made TWO versions: 1. A sheet specific to my school (and for anyone living in the Madison, WI area). 2. A sheet for people not living near Madison.
Our city is having a Bucky Badger sculpture parade. Bucky Badger is the University of Wisconsin mascot. Artists have painted blank Badger sculptures with themes and they are located all over the city. (This is kind of like the famous Cows on Parade.) The center square is to find as many Bucky sculptures as you can and take selfies with them. My plan is to do a create-your-own-Bucky design project at the beginning of the year.

For those not living in this area, you can use the sheet below, which has a different center square.

For my students I am saying to do as many activities from the art challenge as possible. Bring the artwork or photos back to school in the fall, so we can display them for everyone to see. Anyone who participates will get a small prize and certificate.
