Abstract Shape Collages and Artist Reggie Laurent

A collage made by first-graders featuring colorful, abstract shapes inspired by Artist Reggie Laurent.

Reggie Laurent:  Contemporary Artist

Reggie Laurent is a self-taught artist living in Georgia.  He creates very intricate abstract shape paintings.  I saw his paintings online and I was immediately drawn to all of the fun patterns and colors.

My first graders learned about his abstract pictures. They are filled with lots of different shapes, fitted together like a puzzle.  His artworks are highly detailed and very colorful.

Student Shape Collages

The students learned about and used organic (freeform) and geometric shapes in their collages. Shapes were cut from construction paper and glued to black paper.

Materials (some Amazon Affiliate links used)

  • Black construction paper (I use Tru-Ray)
  • Assorted and neon colored construction paper
  • Glue sticks
  • Scissors (regular and/or decorative edged)
  • Crayola Metallic Markers (these metallic markers are clean, safe for kids and show up pretty nicely on black paper)
  • Kwik Stix solid tempera paint sticks (the white colors on the black construction paper were the Kwik Stix.  They also used them to draw designs on top of the cut out shapes)

They used paint sticks and metallic markers to add patterns and details on top of the shapes and on the black paper.   I got the idea for this project from this presentation on Shapely Abstractions. by Mrs. Phillips, who did a similar lesson with her students.

Here are some more of our finished shape collages.  I love how they are all unique, busy, colorful and show the students’ personalities.
