Annual Art Re-Swap

Today I am going to show you some fun pictures of super cool art teacher finds that I picked up at an Art Re-Swap.  My city has an art supply swap at least once a year and it is probably one of my favorite events of the year!  How it works is people bring in old supplies and “stuff” that can be used in art projects.  Then, you can take anything you want from the piles of stuff other people bring in.  It’s all free!   Local artists, businesses, teachers and other people come to donate their old items.  Don’t you just get all excited when you find vintage ephemera, buttons and FUN COLORFUL THINGS?

The first thing I found which was pretty cool was this wallpaper book.  Aren’t these some beautiful patterns?

A collage of 8 patterned fabrics featuring various floral and geometric designs in multiple colors. Mat board pieces are always great to use for painting on, mounting artwork or creating sculptures.  Many frame shops will donate their pieces for free or low cost.

A bag containing several colorful sheets of paper in red, black, blue, and green.

I found several sheets of deep purple/silver star paper.  Yay!

The black fabric with a white star pattern lies partially unrolled on a textured surface.

Here is a small selection of fabric and fiber materials that I liked.

A box containing colorful yarns, fabric pieces, and neon shoelaces arranged in a mixed pattern.

I found a bag of brown lunch bags, some colorful googly eyes, chalk, buttons, jewelry tool, streamers and beads.

A box of assorted craft supplies including beads, buttons, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, and crepe streamers.

Did you know that if you have this thick gray telephone wire and cut it open, there is colorful wire inside?

Coiled gray electrical cables on a concrete surface near an annual pink art piece.

This is the colorful wire that is inside the gray telephone lines!  I don’t really know where else you can get this, but maybe you can ask a telephone company.

Close-up of colorful computer or electrical wires bundled together in various vibrant shades.

Isn’t it gorgeous?

Close-up of colorful, intertwined electrical wires.

I can’t believe someone was getting rid of these amazing crepe banners.

Colorful paper flower decorations in yellow, green, blue, and pink hanging outdoors.

I have one of these hanging in my room and I am saving the other ones to decorate during an art show.

Colorful, interwoven paper decorations in red, green, blue, yellow, and pink displayed on a flat surface.

A large pile of good paper.

A cardboard box filled with various papers, folders, and art supplies.

These fun wood shapes!  LOVE!

A pile of variously shaped and colored wooden pieces.

Jar of smooth stones.  I have a couple nature sculpture projects I am planning on doing this year.

Close-up of assorted smooth pebbles in various colors and sizes inside a round white container, creating an artful display.

And this little wooden canoe.  I saw this and thought it would be adorable for my kids to play with.

A wooden model canoe with a dark brown exterior and an open interior, showcased on a light wooden surface.

Vintage photographs are so fascinating.  And this chunky necklace is super fun.

Black and white photos of people of various ages are arranged with a colorful beaded necklace on a white background.

Here are lots of vintage fashion pictures.  These would be fun to put in my art journal or use to make a collage.

Several fashion sketches featuring various outfits laid out on a table.

When I saw these vintage greeting cards and ephemera I knew I just had to have them.

Collection of various vintage paper crafts, including heart-shaped cutouts, a cat figurine, and autumn leaves. A collection of ornate vintage greeting cards featuring intricate designs, lace, and floral patterns on a white background.

This was a daily calendar with some interesting scientific drawings.

A stack of nature-themed calendar pages featuring annual illustrations of animals, insects, and plants on a white background.

Do you have any art supply swaps like this in your town?  Can you think of any good art projects to do with the supplies I found?  Tell me in the comments!

I would also love to start an art swap in my city. Is there a contact person or someplace to get information on how to organize? Maybe a guest interview on your blog…

  4. Great idea! We did something similar at our art teacher network’s professional development day in March. We all brought in something we had tons of that we were willing to share. Some teachers brought in amazing stuff (like bags and bags and bags of someone’s mother in law’s pedigree cat breeder winning trophy ribbons!) Everyone just grabbed what they fancied and then we brainstormed what the stuff could be used for – it was hilarious – and a great way to recycle marvellous stuff that you sometimes just get too much of!

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
