Pattern Block Pictures

Earlier this year, I bought the packet “Teaching the Elements of Art” made by Teaching in Paradise.  This shape tracing project was included in the packet.  With Courtney’s permission, I am sharing the beautiful results my students produced.

Colorful geometric shape patterns and a cartoon girl made from pattern blocks with the text "Shape Tracing with Pattern Block Pictures.

We used pattern blocks that I had in my classroom.

A colorful assortment of wooden pattern blocks in different shapes inside a green basket, with a hand reaching in.

The students arranged the blocks to make shape pictures and traced them.  After the designs were traced, they outlined them with a darker color and colored them in.  Some of the students worked on using darker and lighter shades of the colors.

A geometric pattern block picture with yellow hexagons, surrounded by orange, green, white, and pink shapes on a black background. A colorful Pattern Block Picture mandala featuring blue, pink, and green shapes on a black circular background.

Colorful geometric shapes with hexagons, squares, and diamonds on a black background, each uniquely patterned and arranged.

If you want to learn more about different art projects involving shapes, look at the Art is Basic archives about shapes.
