For Earth Day, my 4th & 5th grade class drew endangered trees and birds using oil pastels. The entire lesson took about 3-4 class periods to finish. The students each used a picture of their tree or bird to recreate on a piece of 9″x12″ paper. We talked a little bit about layering and blending colors with the oil pastels. We were able to go outside on Earth Day to enjoy the sunshine while drawing.
Our Earth Day committee came up with this idea for my class (homeroom) to work on. I think the kids did a fantastic job! I realized that we don’t use oil pastels enough and that the kids mostly really like them.
This student was very discouraged with his bird and said it looked like a preschooler drew it. Even though he didn’t think he was doing well, he still kept persisting at the drawing. I think he tried very hard and I really enjoy the end result! I think the colors and the drawing marks are beautiful.
