I have a fun creativity drawing project and excellent children’s book to share with you today. I came across this book called A World of Your Own by Laura Carlin and thought it looked intriguing, so I ordered it. I love the illustrations in the book and the story encourages children to think of how they would imagine a world of their own.
On a day when I was out sick, I left this book for the substitute teacher to read. I used it with classes from Kindergarten to 4th grade. Here are a few of the lovely pages from this book. On each of the pages she thinks of how the world already looks and then how she changes it a little to make it into her own world.
She imagines her neighborhood.
And types of transportation…
Her house…
What school would look like…
And many other aspects of her world.
The pictures are fanciful combinations of photos of real life things, sculptures she made, drawings and collage. LOVE it!
I left directions to the kids to think of what their own world would look like. What would the houses look like? What businesses would be in their world? What would school be like? What kind of animals or people would live there? How would transportation work? And so forth..
This was a very open-ended project which I think is pretty close to complete choice drawing while still having a theme or goal. The students virtually could draw almost anything, because it was how they imagined their own world.
Here are some of my students’ artworks.
This was a highly engaging project that the students were super excited to make. Many of them used additional papers to draw more of their world.
Have you seen this book before? Have you ever had your students draw a world of their own? Share in the comments!

Love the book… I am a traditional teacher. I would want to take classes from a traditional classroom teacher. But I also offer choice in that when the kids are finished with their work the have to work in their journals. There are different stations they can work at. Most kids, especially in elementary school need some type of guided instruction. But I want to make sure I have places where the others can spread their wings!
I’d love to connect with kids and art!! My book is fall related-To the Cider Mill-kids color and add their own art along with a story-Let me know if you’d like more info!!Love to work with you!!

Hi Marcia! Thanks for sharing. I love using children’s books as prompts for lessons, and this one seems to do so in a way that allows for meaningful and creative experiences.
Hi, Marcia…. I hope you don’t mind. I posted a link back to here on my art sub blog. What a nice lesson. Jan
