How to Make Artist Trading Cards using Coffee Filters

A collage showing "How to Make Artist Trading Cards using Coffee Filters" with four colorful, abstract card designs.

My third grade students recently made these fun Artist Trading Cards (or ATCs for short.)  They are sized at 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ and they were made using a fun technique on coffee filters.

To make these cards, you will need

  1. Artist Trading Card blanks
  2. Sharpie permanent markers
  3. Crayola markers
  4. Coffee filters
  5. Spray bottle with water
  6. Scissors and glue

Two open Crayola marker boxes, blank Artist Trading Cards, a black marker, and a white cloth on a blue surface.

Steps:

1. Doodle lines and shapes on a coffee filter with Sharpie permanent markers.

2.  Color in the background spaces with Crayola washable markers.

Abstract, colorful doodles with stars, swirls, and shapes on a white, curved coffee filter.

3.  Lay the coffee filter on top of newspaper and spray with water.  The Crayola colors will blend and bleed.   The Sharpie markers will stay permanent.

4. Leave the coffee filter to dry overnight.  When it is dry, place a blank Artist Trading Card on top of the coffee filter.  Trace around the ATC.  Then, cut out the coffee filter rectangle and glue on to a blank Artist Trading Card.

This looks like so much fun! May I ask what type of glue/adhesive you used to attach the art tot he card? I wouldn’t want it to bleed through. I found you through Pinterest, and now I’ll be your newest subscriber. I’m excited to explore your blog! Thank you!

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
