Lego Brickworld Convention 2015

Are you a fan of Legos?  Did you know there is a new documentary film coming out July 31 called Beyond the Brick: A Lego Brickumentary?  You can see the official trailer here.  Have you heard of the Lego Brickworld Convention?

In June, I went to the Lego Brickworld Convention in Schaumburg, IL.  My husband went for the entire 4 day convention as an exhibitor with his Lego User Group.  I attended with my kids for the afternoon on the Saturday, which was open to the public.  As an art teacher, there were many fascinating displays to look at.  Personally I am more interested in the artsy displays, the ones with moving parts and the ones related to characters I recognize. There were a lot of sci-fi/comic book references that I know went right over my head, so I may not have included some of those.   I have a lot of pictures of exhibits which I will share with you in two different posts.  First, I will show you some of the general displays.  In my next blog post, I will focus on some of the awesome mosaic art made from Legos.

The WisLug (Madison/Milwaukee group) created displays based around the theme A Brick Through Time.  Below is a small sample of their display.  You can see close-up pictures of all their work on this Flickr gallery.

Various LEGO models are on display at Brickworld, including impressive Civil War scenes, buildings, and a "WiSLUG" sign at the convention.

This was a moving display by WisLug.

Here are some more pictures by other Lego groups. At Brickworld Convention, intricate LEGO displays, including cityscapes, spaceships, and themed scenes, are showcased on multiple tables at the event.

A Lego bar with stools and plants, with people seated. Text reads: "This was a bar made out of Legos on display at Brickworld Convention. Yes, a real, working bar!

This video was probably my favorite display in the whole convention hall.  This was based on one of those coin machines that push the coins over the edge.  Visitors could put Lego pieces in to win more pieces.

This child-friendly exhibit allowed visitors to control the moving parts.  However, it was not friendly enough for a 1 year old as he embarrassed us by grabbing a Lego guy on stilts.

A collage featuring children at Brickworld, showcasing various Lego displays including McDonald's, Polar Express, and a vibrant quilt.

A lot of the city scenes had familiar buildings like White Castle or Culvers.

The Minions were also a popular theme this year.

Are you tired of pictures yet?  Don’t worry, there’s more!

A collage of Lego creations: Minions, bowling alley, flowers, Calvin and Hobbes, Harry Potter, and a promo poster from Brickworld.

These displays are huge!  It seems Lego fans also love Simpsons.

The 2015 Brickworld Convention featured various intricate LEGO displays, including a cityscape, medieval fortress, WWII creation, and colorful village scenes.

If you enjoyed this post, stay tuned, as my next post will show some of the many artsy mosaics that were at the Lego convention this year.
