Have you seen the art installation of ceramic poppies at the Tower of London? It is amazing! If you follow that link, there is a video about how the installation was made.
The poppy is a remembrance symbol for soldiers who have died in war. The symbol comes from the poem “In Flander’s Field”, where poppies grew in a field over the graves of soldiers.
Each year, our 5th/6th grade class gets a visit from the wife of a veteran, who shares the history of the poppy and the importance of remembering that history. She is also in charge of organizing a Veteran’s Day ceremony at the local senior center. Our art class creates posters to honor the veterans and then on Veteran’s Day (November 11) we visit the senior center to take part in the Veteran’s Day program. Our students sing songs and the artwork is displayed.

Hi Marcia! These are lovely. I love how you integrated American and British Veteran’s Day traditions.
Thanks Rina! I’m glad I was able to connect to a contemporary art installation too.
