William Wegman: Photomontage Project for Kids

Two book covers titled "Flo & Wendell Explore" and "Flo & Wendell" by William Wegman, featuring photomontage illustrations of cute dogs.

My third grade students learned about the photography, films, paintings and children’s books by contemporary artist William Wegman.  I actually talked to Bill on the phone and had an interview with him, which you can read in this blog post.

William Wegman is known for his anthropomorphic photos of dogs dressed in various costumes.

Anthropomorphic means giving human characteristics to animals (or other non-human things.)

We read his books, watched some of his short films and saw pictures of his artworks.  Two of his children’s books are Flo & Wendell and Flo & Wendell Explore.  These are fantastic books and I highly recommend them if you would like to teach your students about Bill’s art.  Here are some peeks at some of the pages in his books.

Illustration of two dogs, Flo in a pink skirt and Wendell in yellow pants, holding suitcases, in a kids' book by William Wegman. Illustration of two hikers holding a red canoe above their heads. Text reads, "The canoe was heavy, but together they made light of it." A children's book illustration of two dogs selling lemonade at a stand with a "LEMONADE 5¢" sign. Illustrated book pages show dogs in various costumes, like a princess, clown, ringmaster, and superhero. Painting of an anthropomorphic dog holding a fish with the text, "I got one." Another dog is fishing in the background.

I love how he combines painting and photographs in his colorful illustrations.  You can get these books here:  Flo & Wendell and Flo & Wendell Explore.  Bill shared with me that he is currently working on a children’s book about his life as an artist.  I can’t wait until that comes out!

After discussing Bill’s artwork, the students neatly cut out some animal heads and glued them to their papers.  Then, they used anthropomorphosis to create interesting settings and clothes for their animals.  The students cut pictures from handouts like this one.

A photomontage of six dogs of different breeds, including a Chihuahua, Border Collie, Labrador, Beagle, Bernese Mountain Dog, and Samoyed.

If you would like to download and print out the three handouts I used, they are here: Animal Handouts

This photomontage features two cats with human bodies at a wedding, one in a tuxedo and top hat, the other in a bridal gown with veil.A child's drawing featuring animal heads on human bodies next to a house, colorful shapes, and scribbles brings a whimsical touch similar to a playful photomontage by William Wegman.Children with dog heads wearing swimsuits play volleyball on a sunny day, reminiscent of a William Wegman photomontage. Dogs with human bodies are dressed as a diner, chef, and waiter in a playful restaurant setting with tables and chandeliers. This photomontage project features a drawing of two kids with dog heads, wearing dresses and playing catch on grass. A crayon drawing of cats with human bodies playing on a treehouse: one climbing, one inside, and one sitting nearby, resembles the whimsical style of William Wegman.
