Review of Multi-Media Art Paper

Packets of Neapolitan construction paper, multi-media art paper, and a roll of fingerpaint paper perfect for preschoolers lie on a dark surface.

Remember these samples I got from the Pacon company?  Several of you were curious about the multi-media art paper, so I decided to test it out.

I primarily use watercolor and collage in my personal art and I am always looking for good paper to use.  I first tested this out by painting shapes and patterns with watercolor.  I do tend to use quite a bit of water when blending colors. Here are the results.  Here are the pictures (without any editing.)

Abstract watercolor doodles and patterns in vibrant colors.A sheet of abstract watercolor shapes and patterns in vibrant colors, featuring circles, stars, and geometric designs.

I do like the color quality of the watercolors on this paper.  There is some wrinkling of the paper, as you can see in the pictures.  It is better than construction paper, but not as good as watercolor paper (when using watercolors.)

On this next page, I used some watercolors, inks, acrylics and collage.  Here are the results with no photo editing.  You can see that there are some waves in the paper (which could be flattened with an iron) but when they are hidden more when using collage elements on the paper.

Text "Listen to Your Art" painted in colorful, artistic letters with abstract patterns and shapes in the background. Colorful artwork with the words "Listen to Your ART" in playful, vibrant letters and abstract patterns in the background, incorporating multi-media elements.

All in all, it is a decent paper, but for my elementary classroom I will probably stick to using regular watercolor paper for watercolors.  This paper is probably a better choice for tempera painting when compared to regular construction paper.  It would be decent for collages too.  I’m not raving about it, but I don’t dislike it either.

  1. Hi Marcia,
Do you have a specific brand of watercolor paper that you prefer? The paper I’ve tried always curls and wrinkles badly. I’d rather purchase better paper, if there’s some out there that stays relatively flat when painted on. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! 🙂

    • Hmmm.. I’ve tried all several kinds but honestly I don’t remember what brand we ordered because I took them out of the box and didn’t write down the name. I usually order the thickest kind (higher lb.)that my budget will allow. Then I flatten it with an iron or heavy books. Sometimes for the little kids I use white tagboard from Nasco which works ok.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
