Over the weekend, our school had a book fair at Barnes & Noble. There were musical performances by the students, story book read-alouds and an author visit. A percentage of the sales went to our school to buy books for our library. It was great fun and I think we will get a significant amount of books for our school!
I was asked to have a craft table with a holiday theme. I decided we would make ornaments and pins. To prepare, I collected metal and plastic lids from families at school. Then, I had student helpers hot glue ribbon on the back (for the ornaments) or pin backs (for buttons.)
Having this all prepared ahead of time allowed kids of any age to do the craft. My 4 year old did the one on the left. We had kids all the way up to 8th grade and some parents making them together.
The table was a hit! Most of the students chose to make ornaments. We had a LOT of kids make them. And, it looked like a lot of people were buying books to support our school! Here are some of the supplies we used to decorate the ornaments/pins:
- seasonal scrapbook paper (cut in circles for the background)
- white, blue, red and green cotton balls
- seasonal foam stickers
- glitter glue
- old greeting cards to cut up
- red and green feathers
I know I have been posting some of the more “crafty” projects lately and I know some teachers are strongly opposed to them (as I’ve read on some Facebook groups). But I think doing a craft once in awhile is just fine for a child and the kids & parents love them. That is just my opinion and my experience. I have an ornament that I MADE IN PRESCHOOL that I still love. I would not do a Christmas project in class (as not all of my students celebrate Christmas) but a seasonal project that everyone can enjoy.
