I was happy to receive a review copy of I Heard You Can Draw: A Story for Class Artists Everywhere, written by M. D. Savran, who is an art teacher and author/illustrator in the Tampa Bay area. I’m always happy to support other art teachers!
The description reads: “Sarah loves to draw. When Mrs. Earl catches her drawing a picture in math class, the entire second grade discovers her talent! Suddenly, everyone asks her to draw pictures for them (strange ones, like porcupines driving race cars and unicorns with wings) and that is where her journey begins. This is a story about being true to yourself. This is a must-have book for any elementary classroom library.”
I love including story books about art, art class and artists in my classroom library. I have a large collection that I rotate in and out. The kids can look at them if they have a few minutes of extra time. This is a nice story that I think the kids will love! I didn’t have a chance to introduce it to them before break with the craziness that comes with the weeks before the holidays.
I like that there are a lot of rhyming phrases in the story. The pictures of the girl at work surrounded by sketches are very cute and interesting.
The main point of the book is to stay true to yourself as an artist and to make the art that YOU want to create.
Thank you, Mrs. S. for my classroom copy of your new book! Best of luck to you!
