Monday, November 11 is Veteran’s Day in America.
My 5th and 6th graders had the privilege of a visit from a lady from our local senior center whose husband is a veteran. She talked to the students about the symbolism of the poppy and read to the students the poem “In Flanders Fields.”
The students were invited to create a small artwork that honors all of the veterans. They also had the opportunity to write a poem in response to “In Flanders Fields”.
I was very impressed with the thought and care put into these artworks by the students. They really took their time and came up with some unique ideas to honor the veterans.
On Monday, we are going over to the senior center for a Veteran’s Day remembrance program. Our music teacher is coming too, and the students will sing a few patriotic songs.
All of the artwork will be on display at the senior center for the Veteran’s Day program.
Are you doing anything for Veteran’s Day?
In Flander Fields, by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I love the idea of children using their art to honor the holiday. A great tribute to our veterans. Beautiful artwork!
