Art History Sketchbook Prompts: Set #2

Cover of "Art History Sketchbook Prompts: Set #2" featuring three abstract art pieces on a white background.

My first set of Art History Sketchbook Prompts have been popular and I recently made a second set with all different artists and prompts.

This new set has 16 NEW art history prompts!   16 DIFFERENT artists.

These art history cards feature a selection of inspiring artworks with a prompt that can be used to spark drawing and writing.

Top: Surrealist painting of an eye with sky and clouds inside. Bottom: Impressionist painting of a Japanese bridge over water, derived from Art History.

Print off the cards on cardstock, cut in half and laminate to protect them. You can print off as many copies as you would like. You are welcome to share them with other teachers in your school or district.

Two abstract paintings with questions about their artistic techniques are featured in Set #2. The text describes melting clocks and colorful shapes, inviting a deeper dive into Art History or sketchbook prompts for further exploration.

Students can use these cards
• in art journals or sketchbooks
• at an art center
• as an enrichment activity
• as an activity with a substitute teacher
• to spark an idea for a larger artwork
• in combination with a creative writing activity (have the kids write a story, poem
or statement about their response to the featured artwork)

Each page has two cards, for a total of 16 prompt cards.

Artists include:
Rene Magritte
Claude Monet
Salvador Dali
Wassily Kandinsky
Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Georgia O’Keeffe
Leonardo da Vinci
Egon Schiele
Mary Cassatt
Henri Rousseau
Francis Bacon
Yayoi Kusama (installation art)
Janet Fish
Hans Arp
Saul Steinberg (cartoonist)
Frank Stella

These look like a great idea. Is there a suggested age range for students who might use these cards?

    • I would use them with students in grades 3 – 6. I teach at a gifted & talented school, so I know my students would understand the written text (probably even in 2nd grade here.) Look at the samples and see whether your students would be able to understand them on their own.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
