Watercolor Bird Paintings by First Graders

A collage of first graders' vibrant watercolor bird paintings, displayed in a grid format, with the title "Painted Birds.

I love these charming birds by the 1st graders!  So colorful and a beautiful experience with watercolors.

We read the lovely book The Boy Who Drew Birds, which is about the naturalist/artist John James Audubon.  It is a great book that tells the story of how he loved to study birds and spent his free time as a child drawing and observing nature.  Audubon banded birds to see if the same birds returned each year.  It is a great book to tie in with Science concepts and encouraging kids to get outdoors and explore nature.

The first graders used reference photos of birds to draw their pictures and then painted them with watercolors.

I hope you are having a great summer and good luck starting the new year!

I just love the artwork of the birds. My daughter recently painted an owl on her own (she’s 5) while on vacation… It will be featured in one my upcoming posts. So cute!

  2. duchessofnyc says:

what did they use to draw with, what kind of pen?

  3. duchessofnyc says:

thanks! Are there washable sharpies, or do they work with the permanent ones?
I am a parent who has to make a group collage with some first graders tomorrow for a calendar project, so forgive my newbie questions! Just wondered if washable markers would run if you put paint over them

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
