So, you’re in charge of Spirit Week! Do you need some good ideas?
(See how I used a photo with the kids’ faces obscured? Don’t use pictures where the kids are identifiable unless you have permission from the parents or school. This photo was on our public school website so I grabbed it from there.)

Spirit Days can be fun scattered throughout the year or all in one week. At my school, we have about one dress-up day per month and one or two Spirit Weeks per year. I’ve been in charge of Student Council for about 7 years so we’ve had to come up with a lot of fun days for the school. Here is a list of our most popular ideas.
1. School Colors… an obvious one! Wear school colors or a school t-shirt.
2. Crazy Hair
3. Dress like a character from a book.
4. Coygirl/cowboy
5. Beach Day: bring your beach towel and tropical attire (no swimsuits, please!)
6. Moustaches: tape or draw on a fake moustache
7. Holidays: wear green for St. Patrick’s day, red & pink for Valentine’s day, Mardi Gras, etc
8. Sports Day: wear your sports uniform or support a favorite team
9. Wisconsin Day (our state): wear clothing supporting the Badgers, Brewers, Packers, etc
10. Outdoorsy/Camping day: wear “outdoorsy” clothes, bring your sleeping bag and camping gear, camouflage, etc. The kids had a blast with this one! Many of them brought their sleeping bags in and sat in them at their desks. They laid out the sleeping bags and kiddie camping chairs in the corner of their classrooms and sat on them during breaks and reading time.
11. Animal Day: dress like an animal or bring in your favorite stuffed animal
12. Pajama Day: always a favorite!
13. Twinsie Tuesday: dress like a friend or group of friends
14. Formal Friday: dress in fancy clothes
15. Homeroom Wars/Homeroom Dress-Up Day: each homeroom decides how they will dress (crazy socks, like secret spies, as rock stars, etc.). The Student Council or teachers will decide which homerooms win based on creativity and participation. The kids always get real excited about this one, but next year we are going to tone down the competition aspect to avoid some upset kids.
Other ideas… arts days (dress like an artist, certain colors, etc.), decades, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, bowtie or tie day, backwards or mismatched clothing, Breast Cancer awareness (I think we will do this next year), rainbow day, earth tones for Earth Day.
School Sales Ideas:
To go along with Spirit Weeks, we also have sales days to raise money for Student Council and for charities. These are our favorites:
Muffin Monday: bake sale for charity. Easiest way to do it is to have volunteers bring in bake sale items (muffins, cookies, brownies, whatever) already pre-packaged in baggies that will sell for 50 cents.
Tic-Tac Tuesday: Sell Tic-Tacs, Mentoes, breathmints, Lifesavers and Jollyranchers. Everyone has really nice breath that day!
School Store: Sell a variety of items such as wristbands, little random toys, stickers, erasers, snacks, Smencils.
Thirsty Thursday: Sell a variety of bottled drinks such as Propel flavored water, sparkling waters, low-calorie Gatorade, lemonade and juices.
Dance Theme Ideas:
And, of course, we have middle school dances. You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to get a group of kids to agree on a dance theme. Here are a few of the themes we’ve had in the past which were fun.
1. Beach Themed: Wear beach attire, blow up beach balls and throw them around.
2. Neon/Bubbled Themed: Wear neon colors, decorate with neon colors and blow bubbles outside. Don’t forget to buy glow sticks!
3. Halloween Costumes: Decorate with Halloween decorations, spooky foods and wear Halloween costumes.
4. Masquerade Ball: Everyone bring a mask! The party stores usually have Mardi Gras mask decorations.
5. Winter Themed: Decorate with Christmas lights and snowflakes.
What ideas do you have? Please share! I am always looking for popular, fun ideas for school.

I’m on student council at my high school, and this upcoming homecoming, our week long theme is around the world. So our homecoming dance, at the end of the week on Saturday, the theme is a Mexican fiesta, and we’re trying to get Moe’s or Chipotle to cater!
Sounds like fun! Where are you located that you have homecoming at this time of the year?
