This is a tried and true clay lesson for kids. Who doesn’t love cute monsters?
The 2nd graders started by making pinch pots. This handout shows you how.
Turn the pinch pot on its side and add eyes, teeth, ears, tongues, feet and other details. We painted ours with acrylic and tempera paints.

Hi Marcia
These look great. I especially love the one with the teeth!
Do you ever add any sort of gloss to your painted clay pieces?
Thanks! I do sometimes and I like how they look. We simply ran out of time this year. We were scrambling to finish everything before school ended. 🙂
Hello, thanks for sharing your ideas. I have 20 girl scouts I will be making these with….any idea how much clay (lbs) I would need? Thanks!
I would buy 1 lb per kid to be on the safe side. I am not entirely sure though, but I think that would be enough.
