Clay Castles with 5th and 6th Grade

Two clay castle sculptures, one round and red, the other black with a tall tower, captioned "5th Grade Clay Castles.

The fifth and sixth graders study the Medieval time period in their Language Arts/Social Studies class.  I love teaching this clay castle project because it allows the students to practice important clay building skills (plus it’s just fun!):

  • rolling slabs
  • building with slabs
  • scoring and using slip
  • smoothing
  • adding embellishments
  • glazing

We started by drawing some preliminary sketches of Medieval castles.  The students looked at some examples for reference. The Medieval Castle (one example of a resource) They drew their own ideas for castles based on what they saw.  I did not require them to create a traditional Medieval castle, but I wanted them to infuse their own creativity into the project.

A small, handmade clay castle with a blue and yellow glaze sits on a green base.

A small, green clay castle with an open top sits on a purple base.

A small, hand-sculpted clay castle with an uneven, rustic appearance features a stone path leading to the entrance, making it a charming project for 5th and 6th grade students.

A ceramic castle with red and blue glaze, featuring a jagged, uneven structure and an open top.

A small clay model of a castle, featuring a yellow tower, green and white walls, and an arched entrance.

A ceramic sculpture resembles a fiery, reptilian eye with a black slit pupil and a metallic gray border.

This student made one castle and had time to make another sculpture. I love this EYE bowl!

    Hi Marcia

These are truly fabulous. Your students must have loved this project. The castles are also the right size for play with LEGO minifigs.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
