First Grade Bird Paintings– Audubon

Child's drawing of a pelican perched on a post with a sailboat and a yellow sun in the background over water.First-grade child's painting of an owl with big eyes sitting in a tree, surrounded by a colorful abstract landscape, reminiscent of Audubon bird paintings.

These beautiful bird paintings were drawn and painted by first graders.  The students learned about the artist John James Audubon and we read a book about his life.

I love this book about Audubon, because it has beautiful pictures and ties science and art together nicely.

The students looked at pictures of birds and drew them with crayons.  Then we painted the background with tempera cakes.

Child's drawing of an owl and a small bird on a tree branch with a colorful sky background and green leaves.
This is a lovely picture.. too bad we didn’t use thicker paper, it wrinkled a bit.  Lesson learned!

First grade child's drawing of a colorful bird with long legs and a curved beak standing in a landscape with blue and green areas, much like those seen in Audubon’s bird paintings.

One Response to First Grade Bird Paintings– Audubon

  1. As an encouraging mum, if I can say so myself, I had a nice time recently with my two kids to decorate their room in our new house that we just moved into. There were lots of the children's art work, made at home and school, that we happily put on the wall.
Then we spent time together sitting in front of the iMac and looked through the big collection of digital images that Wahooart had for their customers to select from and have printed as canvas prints. The kids together chose this painting for their room, Ivan Horse by Edmund Dulac, that we ordered online to have delivered to our new house.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
