Scrapbooking

A handmade card with intricate designs, featuring a small "precious" charm and a blue ribbon with scalloped edges.

I’m making a blank scrapbook for a gift.  This person is having twins, so I’m actually making two books.  It’s not for someone I know, but it is something my sister-in-law wants me to make for her to give as a gift.  Does that make sense?  Anyways, I’ve made these before as gifts and they are just the scrapbook pages without the photos.  Anywhere you see “pic” is where the pic would go.  I need to assemble them all in … Read more…

Yay, Christmas! Products and stuff that I bought or received.

Blue recycling symbol with the word "BOOKS" repeated on arrows, text "Save Money. Swap Books." and www.PaperBackSwap.com. A great way to exchange products and save money, especially around Christmas time!

Yay, I love Christmas.  I’m not someone who likes to celebrate Christmas for two months with lights, decorations and music since Thanksgiving.  But on the actual party days with families, I have a lot of fun. I’m also very excited because I have 2 weeks off of teaching to spend time with my darling baby girl and also to spend some time making art.  Daria (who is 1 year and 2 months old) has started to become interested in coloring … Read more…

Holiday Fun

A gingerbread-shaped Christmas ornament with a glittery scarf, mittens, and boots, wearing a top hat and smiling brightly.

One ornament made by a student The week before winter break not much gets done in the classroom.  It’s hard to start something new when we will be off school for 2 weeks.  So, as kids finished up projects I took out a bunch of random art supplies, cookie cutters, glitter, felt, and pipe cleaners for them to make stuff out of.  Here’s an ornament example one kid made.

What’s Your Hang-Up?

Three colorful mixed-media art pieces displayed on a wooden shelf beneath a recessed light on a green wall create an interactive focal point.

This is hanging in my living.  Inspiration was a dream I had about an octopus strangling me and then I was looking through some children’s books and saw some odd pictures of octopuses (octopi?) and I did a series of octopus artworks.. the others have since seen their demise.  This was oil on masonite board.  (pretty sure it was oil.. I made this about 10 years ago.) I’ve been reading a little bit of Michelle Ward’s street team crusade challenges … Read more…

Making Pendants

Close-up of colorful wire-wrapped stones, ideal for jewelry making, on a yellow background.

Making jewelry is one of the hobbies I enjoy.  When people ask me what kind of art I do on my own, I have a hard time saying what I do… I love photography, jewelry making, collages, drawing, watercolor, clay.  I dabble in a little bit of everything.  So, my mother-in-law and I went to a craft show in Madison this weekend and we want to start selling some crafts.  She is thinking about sewing some kids’ capes for boys … Read more…

Drawing Lab for Mixed Media Artists

Drawing of a blue bird with a single visible eye, beak, and part of a wing on a postcard background created by mixed media artists.

I purchased Carla Sonheim’s drawing book, because I’m always interested in looking at new drawing books or new mixed media art books and this is a combination of both.  She has a lot of drawing exercises on her blog also.  As an art teacher who avidly researches all sorts of art lesson plans, I have seen some of these drawing exercises before, but Carla puts her own unique spin on everything.  I really like how the book is laid out, … Read more…

Bohemian Shadows: zendoodling

When I taught middle school art, one of the sketchbook assignments I had the kids complete was a page of doodling. They looked very much these. Bohemian Shadows blog gives a nice tutorial for this type of doodling. There are also books and workshops with the name “Zentangles” (not by Bohemian Shadows).. they coined the name which is basically just a glorified name for doodling. Anyways…. I think this year I will print out some examples for my elementary students … Read more…
