Bubble Prints

Colorful abstract painting with splashes and circles in blue, green, pink, and yellow on a white background. Incorporating elements of Bubble Prints gives it a unique touch.

Over the summer I tested out several ways to make bubble prints.  I experimented and discovered they way that works best for me.  I decided to do bubble printing with some students this week, because it is the week before break and I wanted something fun and out-of-the-ordinary to do with them. So apparently bubbles are out of season right now.  I went to Hobby Lobby however, and found this pack of 24 small party bubbles. Pop off the top … Read more…

Pacific Northwest Coast Masks– third/fourth grades

Handmade reindeer mask with red nose, red ears, and brown eyes with white accents on a gray background, inspired by the Pacific Northwest Coast Masks.

The third/fourth grade classes made paper mache masks.  We used inspiration from the Pacific Northwest Coast masks and viewed a video about their culture.  Here are the steps we used. Start with a papermache mask form (we used some from Nasco). Then, add appendages with newspapers, LOTS of masking tape, pieces of cardboard, yogurt containers, etc. So much fun to build up a mask! After all the parts are very secured with tape (and I mean lots of tape, MORE … Read more…

Collographs– 2nd grade

Stacked artistic paper cards with colorful numbers, letters, and symbols in purple, blue, and green on a table, ideal for engaging 2nd-grade students in creative activities.

2nd grade Collographs:We read about the art of Jasper Johns. He used everyday, ordinary images and created art so people would view them in a new way.  We made a collograph printing plate using letters and numbers cut from foam, alphabet letters, cardboard and foam shapes.  Then we printed them on white paper.  For some of these, we glued colorful shapes on the paper before we printed.

Picture Frame

Colorful square mirror with a red ribbon handle, decorated with various patterns and bright colors.

Today we made picture frame ornaments with the 3rd graders.  First, I cut pieces of thin cardboard into square shapes.  Then, I cut tooling foil slightly larger than the cardboard squares.  The kids folded their tooling foil around the cardboard. Then, they used Crayola Dry Erase crayons and Sharpie markers to decorate the foil.  They left a rectangle in the middle where we will glue their class picture.  We also used Deco Art puff paint for additional details.  A ribbon … Read more…

Paper mache Rattles- Kindergarten

Colorful handmade rattle with red and blue feathers, decorated with drawings and symbols on an orange paper mache circle.

The kindergartners made paper mache rattles after learning about Native American rattles.  We viewed a Powerpoint about the rattles used in Native American ceremonies.  The students made their own rattle which could be used for music and dancing.  We were not trying to copy the rattles, but use them for inspiration.  Here are the steps:1.  First, tape a paint stick to the inside of a paper plate. 2.  Put beans on the plate. 3.  Tape another plate on top.   … Read more…

ATCs

Drawing of two figures walking hand-in-hand toward a large sun, with rays extending outward, on a light blue page.

Artist Trading Cards are a fun “extra” project.  These trading cards can be given to a friend or taped in your sketchbook.  These kids used shape stencils, markers, colored pencils and shape rubber stamps to make theirs.   I have a huge collection of artist trading cards that I have traded over the years and I will show the kids these sometimes.

Beach Paintings

Childlike drawing of a person in swimwear on a beach with a blue ocean and flying seagulls in the background.

To make these fun beach paintings, we started off with a mixture of blue paints and the kids used forks to scrape wave lines on them.  Then, we used sea sponges to sponge prints shades of sand colors on the beach. Then, the kids drew and cut out things that would be on a beach.  Many of the kids got creative and had things popping up off the picture. Some of the kids decided to make waves that rolled off … Read more…
