Insects, Spiders, Bugs and More– 2nd Grade

The second graders drew a bug of their choice on white paper. I had photos for reference and showed them how to use the pencil to create shading and how to blend it with a blending stub. (I call them “smudgy sticks”). Later, they cut out their bug and glued it to another background page. If you haven’t seen Beautiful Oops yet, you must find a copy and look at it.. It’s my favorite book ever! The first graders looked at this book in class and then they were presented with a creative challenge. Each child chose a piece of colored paper with a hole in it. I’m following along with the Strathmore Visual Journaling Workshops and here a few of the pages I created so far. The first workshop is about taking copies of your previous artwork and cutting them up and reusing them on your journal pages. There are blank spaces left because I think she will be talking about writing and doodling next.

This is a dreamcatcher ornament that will be sent to the Governor’s Mansion in Madison, WI for the Christmas tree. A group of kids in a 3rd/4th grade class made this.

I’m in love with painting tiles and making tiles from Sculpey. I just tried making Sculpey tiles this week and wow, was it fun!! I got the idea from Laurie Mika’s book Mixed Media Mosaics. I got the idea for painting tiles from Artsyville.

07-10 Collage, made in July 2010, mixed media, collage, photo and fibers July 10 is my husband’s birthday.. 7/2010 is also when I made this collage… don’t you see? so many layers to the numbers… amazingly enough, my daughter’s birthday is 10/7. Easy to remember, which is great because I am terrible with dates.
