Artsy Book Club

Artsy Book Club

Did you join the Artsy Book Club on Facebook?  It was started by Cassie Stephens.  You should come join us!  We are starting to work through the book One Drawing A Day: A 6-Week Course Exploring Creativity with Illustration and Mixed Media. The first assignment was a pen drawing of a still life set up of stuff you find around you. Drawing immediately with pen is harder than it seems.  I was so worried about drawing a line wrong … Read more…

Summer Art Making!

Colorful collages featuring a mix of shapes, patterns, and text with cheerful designs and inspirational phrases evoke the joy of summer.

We went to Saugatuck, Michigan last week (bet you didn’t know that, because I pre-scheduled blog posts for that time.  You really should be careful what information you give out when you are leaving town. You don’t want to come back to a ransacked house!)  Anyways, we were gone for about 5 days and went to the Indiana Dunes and stayed in a cabin in Saugatuck.  We went with my brothers, nieces/nephews and my parents. We had a blast riding … Read more…

Daria’s in my art journal

Daria's drawing on paper next to a colorful sketchbook on a table with markers and a red jacket in the background.

This is what happens every time I try to take out my art journal when Daria is awake!  LOL. She never wants to color in her own sketchbook, just mine! We are both LOVING these new RoseArt Neon Gel Crayons, 6-Count, Assorted Colors that I ordered from Amazon.  Cheap, and perfect for both adults and kids.  They are like very smooth oil pastels.  I like the brightness of the colors.  There is neon orange, yellow, green, pink and purple.. There … Read more…

Colorful, whimsical design with the quote "Live in the sunshine & embrace today," surrounded by flowers and patterns.

Grid design featuring a multi-colored diamond pattern with cut-out letters scattered on top.

The 3rd/4th grade class used a grid format to design their sketchbook cover.  I am loving using grids in my personal artwork.  I am doing a series of grid mixed media paintings which you can see here, here and here, and oh yeah here too.   To prepare for this lesson, I drew a 1 inch square grid on a piece of 8.5″ x 11″ piece of paper.  Then, I photocopied it for the class.  Here’s a trick.. if you cut … Read more…

Blue intricate stencil framework with orange paint splatter on a white background.

I love the look of stencils, but since I have a toddler I like the process to be easy and quick to clean up.  I need to be ready to switch gears at a moments notice 🙂  I’ve tried using spray inks for the stencils and paints, but this way I just tried seems to be an easy and neat way to make stencil prints.
