Abstract Paintings Inspired by the Art of Shinique Smith

Have you heard of the artist Shinique Smith? I just love her artwork! It’s very gestural, colorful and it just draws me in to look at more closely. I love the use of fabric with graffiti-like painted marks. Her art combines traditional art media with non-traditional materials like clothing and stuffed animals. She is influenced by street graffiti and Japanese calligraphy. She works in paintings, drawings, installations, wrapped bundles, sculptures and videos. Making talking sticks by painting and decorating branches.

Earlier this year, one of the second grade teachers approached me about an idea for an art/social studies collaboration. She had read a story to the children about a tribe which used talking sticks. This is a lesson I teach every year because the results are so beautiful! Each of the kid’s drawings just turns out wonderful. The 4/5s drew trees to complement their studies in Science class. I love these monochromatic rhythm paintings! The lighting was weird when I took the pictures, so I’m not sure the colors are as vibrant as they really are. I am teaching an after school art class for two sessions. We are painting abstract paintings on canvas with acrylic paints! We are also experimenting with spray inks and stencils! Next session, we are going to finish our abstract paintings and then add designs to our sprayed pictures to tie them together.
